Posljednji Stipančići: Povijest jedne patricijske obitelji

Posljednji Stipančići: Povijest jedne patricijske obitelji

Vjenceslav Novak

The novel depicts the social and moral decadence of the Rijeka nobility in the mid-19th century through the fate of the Stipančić family. The head of the family, Niko Stipančić, is an authoritarian father who tries to preserve his reputation and status de

The novel focuses on the children of the old patrician Niko Stipančić – the son Niko wants to become a writer and follows his own ideals, which causes his father's anger and disappointment. The daughter Lucija is a victim of her father's ambition and social norms: she is forced to renounce love and marry according to her father's wishes, which leads to her emotional and physical ruin.

Through the story of the collapse of the Stipančić family, Novak depicts a broader social context: the decline of the patriciate, the conflict between old and new values, and the position of women in a conservative society. The work is permeated with social criticism, but also a deep psychological analysis of the characters.

The novel was published in 1899 and is considered the pinnacle of Novak's literary work and one of the most important novels of Croatian realism.
