Novela je prvi put objavljena 1961. godine u časopisu Novi mir i izazvala je gnev kritičara, ističući da je reč samo o "uskim, intimnim iskustvima junakinje".

U središnjem ženskom liku Kire, Nekrasov je stvorio samostalnu, bezbrižnu, ciljno orijentiranu ženu, a na račun tada poželjnog "kolektivnog i društvenog" tona, dao je prioritet individualnoj ljudskoj priči. Završnu bilješku o autoru napisao je Josef Kadlec.
