The novel is set in the period between the two world wars, focusing on Ivan Katić, the grandson of Aći Katić from the novel "Roots". Ivan, an intellectual and communist sympathizer, is declared a bourgeois and Trotskyist in 1936 and rejected by his comrades.
After the war, he ends up in prison, and upon his release, he faces the breakup of his family. Through Ivan's fate, Ćosić explores the conflict between communism and fascism and the complexity of human destiny in a turbulent historical context.
