Norman Mailer

In this picture of American life that borders on an anxious nightmare, the popular author has told a dark tale of murder and atonement in a temperamental and interesting way, in which some scenes of sexual intercourse are perhaps even more shocking than the bold, ordinary expressions that the author occasionally uses in defiance of Puritanism and good taste. Stephen Rojack, an American war hero and university teacher by profession, wants to devote himself to politics and seeks the shortest path to success: he marries the daughter of one of the richest men in America. However, he soon becomes convinced that he has completely failed, so he seeks "cleansing through filth", murders his wife, and falls into a web of corruption, the police apparatus, the intelligence service and a powerful gangster organization.
