Howard Spring

"I Met a Lady" by Howard Spring is one of his more tender, introspective works, dominated by themes of growing up, the influence of people on our lives, and nostalgia for lost time.

The main character of the novel is Alan, a young man who grows up in poverty in an industrial town in the north of England. As a child, for health reasons, he is sent to Cornwall, where he is placed by a wealthy and noble family. There he meets a lady, a mature woman with a strong personality, who will become his mentor, a moral role model and a symbol of beauty and dignity. Over the years, Alan remembers her influence, but also the whole network of people he met during his stay in the countryside - each of them left a mark on his soul and shaped him as a person. The novel is a melancholic story about the formation of identity, about kindness and disappointment, about love that is not always romantic, but often takes the form of friendship, tenderness or human warmth.
