Luk i voda: Zavičajni rječnik s ušća Drave u Dunav

Đorđe Nešić

Luk i Voda is a poetic local dictionary from the confluence of the Drava and Danube rivers (Bijelo Brdo, Dalj, Baranja). Over 1600 entries preserve the dialect, customs, plants, dishes and spirit of the Danube region – an intimate monument to a language a

The book is an unusual lexicon – not a classic language dictionary, but a poetic, ethnographic and intimate portrait of speech, customs and life at the confluence of the Drava and the Danube (the area of Baranja, Erdut, Dalje, Bijelo Brdo). It contains over 1600 entries: localisms, Turkisms, Hungarianisms, Šokac and Štokavian dialect expressions, names of plants, animals, tools, dishes, customs, beliefs and everyday life.

The title "Luk i voda" is a colloquial idiom (onion as a vegetable, water as a river – a symbol of the basic, vital elements of life on the water and in the garden). Through words, Nešić evokes his homeland: the Danube as an eternal river, vineyards, fields, fishing, peasant work, folk tales, beliefs and a language that is on the verge of disappearing in a minority context.

The dictionary is illustrated (e.g. Borivoj Dovniković Bordo in earlier editions), with a touch of humor, melancholy and love for roots. It is not only a linguistic, but also a cultural monument - it preserves the identity, memory and spirit of the Danube in the era of transition and minority status. Appreciated as a unique contribution to Serbian and Croatian dialectology and literature - "the language of the universe" of this region.
