Opće je mišljenje kako komad predstavlja ne samo zdrav i valjan kazališni predložak nego je i sjajno književno djelo, koje pripada antologiji zapadnoga dramskog pjesništva.

Ben Jonson (1572. – 1637.) i njegov ponajbolji tekst, Volpone (Hiti Lisac, kako autor sam dodaje u podnaslovu), nisu napustili pozornice svijeta sve do danas. Jednom riječju, danas imamo pred sobom klasičan komad, ali tada posve nov, »moderan« i prepun elemenata što se javljaju prvi put, a zadržali su se kao sastavni dio europske dramske tehnologije sve do u dvadeseto stoljeće. Po sebi, najbolje Jonsonove komedije, medu kojima Volpone zauzima mjesto remek-djela, nisu ništa slabije od onih Shakespeareovih, tek – Jonson je drukčiji, pripada ponešto različitoj tradiciji, drukčijemu tipu nadahnuća.
