Podgorske pripovijesti

Vjenceslav Novak

A collection of realistic stories by Vjenceslav Novak about life in the poor hinterland of Senj. They depict the difficult everyday life of the people of Podgora, poverty, customs, family dramas and the struggle for dignity in the harsh Podgora environmen

Podgorske pripovijesti (Volume 10 of the Collected Works of Vjenceslav Novak, edited by Slavko Ježić) is a collection of short stories originally published in 1889. It represents one of the strongest expressions of Novak's regional realism and his deep attachment to the Senj Podgorje region.

In his stories, Novak portrays the lives of ordinary people in the rugged, poor Podgorje region in a documentary and with great compassion: the difficult struggle for survival, patriarchal customs, superstition, poverty, alcoholism, family conflicts and rare moments of joy. Among the most famous stories are Lutrijašica (an anthological story about an old woman who dreams of happiness), Raskuće Luka Doljana, Sirote, Salamon and others.

In a precise, picturesque and psychologically convincing style, Novak depicts the impact of harsh nature and social circumstances on the "little man". His stories are not just regional sketches – they carry a universal social critique and a humane view of people who have not been blessed by life. Rich descriptions of the landscape (bora, karst, rocky areas), vivid dialogue in the local dialect and deep insight into the psychology of the characters make this collection a true pearl of Croatian realistic prose of the 19th century.

Podgorske pripovijesti is an important part of Novak's oeuvre and an indispensable read for all lovers of Croatian classics, regional literature and stories about homeland, poverty and human resilience.
