Fernand Baldensperger

A classic work of comparative literature in which Fernand Baldensperger considers the nature, development and social role of literature and its connections with national and European cultural trends.

Literature by the French literary historian and comparatist Fernand Baldensperger is one of the foundational works of modern literary theory and history. The Croatian edition was published in Zagreb in 1944, translated by Josip Andreis, as the first book in a library dedicated to literary and aesthetic issues.

The author views literature as a complex cultural phenomenon that transcends the boundaries of individual languages and national traditions. Starting from the historical development of literary forms, Baldensperger explores the relationships between literature, society, ideas and art and shows how literary works are created in continuous dialogue with the cultural environment. He pays special attention to the transfer of motifs, influences between literatures and the role of literature in shaping European cultural heritage.

The book is written in an accessible but scientifically based style and represents a concise introduction to the fundamental issues of literary theory, literary history and comparative literature. Due to its broad perspective and emphasis on international literary connections, the work played a significant role in popularizing the comparative approach to the study of literature.

The Croatian edition from 1944 is also interesting as a cultural-historical document. Published in wartime circumstances, it testifies to the efforts of the publishing and cultural institutions of the time to bring relevant European scientific and humanistic works closer to the Croatian public and to maintain the continuity of intellectual life despite political and social turmoil.
