Vojislav Lubarda

Vojislav Lubarda's debut novel, Swing, explores the moral lapses, alienation, and uncertain fate of the individual in post-war society through a psychologically nuanced story about war trauma and ideological conflicts.

The Swing (1963) is the debut novel by the writer Vojislav Lubarda, who already announced his recognizable interest in difficult historical, social and psychological themes with this early work. The plot and motif structure of the novel are focused on the post-war period in which the individual is confronted with the difficult legacy of World War II, ideological pressures and moral dilemmas in the newly emerging social order. The metaphor of the "swing" in the title symbolizes the constant instability, crucification and inner shakiness of the main characters who, by moving from one extreme to the other, are vainly trying to free themselves from war traumas and feelings of guilt. Lubarda does not deal with a pathetic depiction of the victors and the vanquished, but rather delves into the deep layers of human psychology, revealing loneliness, alienation, betrayal and the impossibility of establishing a complete identity. Stylistically, the novel is characterized by an atmosphere of tension, subtle internal monologues and dramatic dialogues. The Swing is a powerful and critically focused prose work that foreshadows the author's later thematic focus on the complex and often silenced tragedies of humanity in the Balkans.
