Wansfell wanders the relentless landscapes of Death Valley, Mojave, and Arizona for years, facing thirst, heat, storms, and loneliness, seeking redemption through suffering. Fate does not leave him alone, however: he saves the life of the girl Magdalena Virey ("Daughter of Dismukes"), falls in love with her, but rejects happiness because he considers himself a cursed murderer.
