Hemingwayev roman Zbogom oružje (1929.), smješten na talijansko-austrijskom frontu, prati ljubavnu priču i ratne doživljaje Frederica Henryja, američkog poručnika koji služi kao vozač hitne pomoći u talijanskoj vojsci tijekom Prvog svjetskog rata.

Frederic, mladi i cinični vojnik, upoznaje Catherine Barkley, britansku medicinsku sestru, u bolnici u Milanu. Njihova veza počinje površno, ali se razvija u duboku ljubav dok se suočavaju s ratnim užasima. Frederic je ranjen i privremeno povučen s fronte, što produbljuje njihov odnos. Catherine zatrudni, a Frederic se vraća na bojište, gdje svjedoči kaosu i moralnom propadanju, posebice tijekom povlačenja talijanske vojske kod Caporetta.

Nakon što je gotovo pogubljen od strane vlastitih saveznika u kaotičnom bijegu, Frederic dezertira, odlučan da se vrati Catherine. Pronalaze utočište u neutralnoj Švicarskoj, gdje pokušavaju živjeti idiličan život. Međutim, njihova sreća je kratkotrajna – Catherine umire tijekom teškog poroda, zajedno s njihovim djetetom. Frederic, slomljen, ostaje sam, suočen s tragičnom prolaznošću života.

Roman je poznat po Hemingwayevom minimalističkom stilu, realističnim dijalozima i snažnom prikazu ratne brutalnosti i krhkosti ljudskih odnosa. Kroz ljubavnu priču, Hemingway ispituje egzistencijalnu prazninu i traži smisao u svijetu obilježenom gubicima.
