Noć do jutra
Branko Hoffmann's Night to Morning is a psychological and social novel about a former political prisoner who, after years of silence, confronts the man responsible for his suffering and examines his own past.
Night to Morning is the most famous novel by Slovenian writer Branko Hofman. The work deals with the sensitive topic of political persecution in post-war Yugoslavia, and the plot is focused on one night during which events from the past that marked the lives of the main characters are revealed.
The central character of the novel is Peter, a former political prisoner who, years after his release from prison, tried to live a peaceful life. However, a meeting with a man who once participated in his interrogation and persecution reopens wounds that he believed had healed. Over the course of one long night, a tense conversation develops between them, in which the circumstances of the arrest, the days in prison, and the consequences that political repression had on individuals and their families are gradually revealed.
Through memories and confessions, we learn how the system of fear, coercion, and ideological control functioned. The novel not only depicts the suffering of the victims, but also the inner doubts of people who participated in the repressive apparatus. Hofman avoids a simple division into good and bad characters and explores how political systems can deform human relationships and moral values.
Peter's wife and family members who also suffered the consequences of his conviction play an important role. Their fates show that political violence affects not only the individual but also his environment.
The novel caused great attention after its publication because it was among the first in Yugoslav literature of the time to openly speak about political prisons and post-war repression. Night to Morning is not just the story of one man but also a powerful testimony about guilt, responsibility, memory and the need for the truth, no matter how unpleasant, to finally be spoken.
