Die Geschichte des Seemanns Gulliver und seiner Abenteuer diente Jonathan Swift als Rahmen, in dem er seine kritische Sicht auf die damalige Gesellschaft zum Ausdruck brachte.

Gegenstand seines vernichtenden Spottes sind nicht Einzelpersonen, Umgebungen oder Klassen, sondern die menschliche Natur an sich. Gulliver besuchte auf seinen Reisen vier Orte: Lilliput, eine Insel der winzigen Wesen; Brobdingnag, wo alle riesig sind; die fliegende Insel Laputa, bewohnt von Philosophen; und das Land der Houyhnhnms, voller besessener Wissenschaftler.
