Norwegian Wood (1987) is a cult and most realistic novel by Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. Titled after the famous song by The Beatles (Norwegian Wood), the novel is a nostalgic story of growing up, loss, loneliness and first love, set in the socially turbulent late 1960s in Tokyo.
The main character, a quiet and introspective student Toru Watanabe, is oppressed by the memory of his best friend Kizuki's suicide. Through this loss, he becomes close to Kizuki's ex-girlfriend Naoko, with whom he shares a quiet, deep, but extremely fragile emotional bond. While Naoko retreats to a sanatorium in the mountains to fight her own psychological instability, Toru meets Midori at college – a lively, open and unconventional girl who is the complete opposite of the dark world in which Naoko lives. Toru finds himself torn between loyalty to the past and the urge to live and the future.
Written in a subtle, intimate style without the magical realism for which Murakami is known, Norwegian Wood is an emotionally powerful meditation on grief and the inability to fully understand other people. The novel achieved unprecedented global success and cemented Murakami's status as one of the world's most important contemporary writers.
