Paula Rem

"In the Name of Capital" (2021) by Paula Rem is a dystopian and socially critical novel. Through a dynamic plot, it explores the impact of corporate power, consumerism and the loss of humanity in the modern world.

The novel "In the Name of Capital", by young Croatian author Paula Rem, published in 2021, is an engaging and layered literary work that tackles the pressing problems of contemporary society – ruthless capitalism, corporate greed and the commercialization of all spheres of human life. Set in a close, dark and recognizable reality, the novel depicts a world in which material profit, economic interests and market efficiency have become supreme values that suppress ethics, empathy and interpersonal solidarity. Through a tense plot and complexly characterized characters, the author analyzes how the systemic pressure of capital shapes the individual, forcing him to compromise and sacrifice his own integrity for the sake of survival or advancement on the social ladder. The storytelling is dynamic, imbued with sharp irony and convincing social commentary that encourages the reader to question the system in which he lives. In this novel, Paula Rem demonstrates exceptionally mature narrative skills, combining elements of social drama, political satire and dystopian tones. "In the Name of Capital" is a provocative and much-needed read that provides a powerful critique of consumerism and warns of the dangers that arise when financial values take complete control over human destiny.
