Hrvatski bog Mars

Hrvatski bog Mars

Miroslav Krleža

Krleža's best-known collection of short stories, The Croatian God Mars, is part of an imagined cycle of literary works with the theme of the First World War and Croatian Home Guards.

This anti-war collection is a critique of the madness of war and violence directed towards the enemy as well as towards one's own subjects, but also of the prevailing social relations of imperial Austria-Hungary, whereby Krleža expresses his leftist political orientation - the belief that the communist revolution will rid humanity of such horrors once and for all. The realism and naturalism of the description are comparable to the expressionist symbolism and allegory, especially in Croatian Rhapsody.
