Glavni lik Rubašev zatvoren je 1938. godine i prisiljen priznati “zločine protiv države” koje nije počinio. No, u svojoj glavi on zna da je kriv jer je radio za sistem koji je prouzročio toliko patnje. Roman je temeljen na piščevu osobnom iskustvu zatvorenika i ozloglašenim Staljinovim suđenjima. Ujedno je značio i Koestlerov prekid s komunističkom ideologijom.
