Spolne bolesti: historijat - razvitak - znaci - socijalno značenje - liječenje - zaštita

Mile Dejanović

The book deals with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the context of public health at the time. The work is a comprehensive account of STDs, combining medical expertise with social awareness, making it a valuable resource for the history of medicine

The author, a doctor and expert in dermatovenerology, systematically deals with the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of STDs, such as syphilis, gonorrhea and soft ulcers, which represented a significant health problem in the first half of the 20th century.

Dejanović emphasizes the importance of educating the public and destigmatizing the sick, highlighting the social and moral aspects of the disease. The book is written in professional but understandable language, intended for doctors, medical students and a wider audience. The first part of the work is dedicated to etiology and pathogenesis, describing in detail the bacterial agents and transmission routes. Followed by chapters on clinical manifestations, where the author uses examples from practice, and on the therapeutic methods of the time, including the use of salvarsan and bismuth for syphilis.

Special attention is paid to prevention, including hygiene measures and the role of health institutions. Dejanović criticizes the lack of systematic health policies in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and advocates an organized fight against prostitution as a factor in the spread of STDs.
