Ukroćena goropadnica

Ukroćena goropadnica

William Shakespeare

An early comedy by W. Shakespeare in which the nobleman Petruccio tries to "tame" the shrewd and rebellious Catherine. Through outwit and humor, it explores the themes of marriages of convenience, gender, and social roles.

The Taming of the Shrew (written in the early 1590s) is one of the earliest, most performed, and most controversial comedies by English playwright William Shakespeare. Based on Renaissance motifs of outwitting and the battle of the sexes, the comedy tells a dynamic, highly humorous, and multifaceted story about the relationship between social conventions, marriage, and individual will. The story is set in Padua, where wealthy merchant Baptista Minola refuses to marry his younger, gentle, and suitor-favored daughter Bianca before her older sister Catherine marries. Catherine is known throughout the city for her sharp tongue, impetuous nature, and defiance of social expectations, which causes suitors to shun her. The plot begins with the arrival of the nobleman Petruccio from Verona, who decides to marry Catherine — primarily attracted by her rich dowry, but also by the challenge of "taming" her. Through a series of comic antics, extravagant behavior and psychological provocations at the estate in Verona, Petruccio tries to break Catherine's resistance. Parallel to the main plot, a classic Renaissance plot unfolds in which several suitors (Lucentio, Hortensio and Gremio) compete for Bianca's affection under cover and in disguise. Written in lively, energetic verse and rich in slapstick humor, the comedy "The Taming of the Shrew" still inspires numerous discussions and interpretations today — from those who see it as a satire of patriarchal society and a role-playing game, to those who read it as a complex story about finding mutual respect and partnership within the social framework of the Renaissance era.

Margaret Atwood
