Phraseological units, such as idioms, proverbs and fixed expressions, are accompanied by German equivalents, often with the first translations into German. The dictionary is structured alphabetically, with Croatian phrases, their German translations, explanations of meaning and examples of use.
Special attention is paid to idioms without direct equivalents, where descriptive translations or contextual alternatives are offered. It also includes cultural notes, because phraseologisms often reflect the specificities of Croatian and German culture. For example, an expression such as “imati maslaca na glavi” can be translated into German “nicht ganz unschuldig sein”, with a note on the figurative meaning (to be guilty).
This dictionary is the first of its kind in terms of scope and depth of treatment, making it an indispensable tool for translators, linguists, students and researchers. It helps avoid literal translations, deepens language understanding and facilitates intercultural communication, especially in academic and professional contexts.
