The Old Pazin High School is one of the most famous prose works by Mate Balota (pseudonym of Mija Mirković), a prominent Croatian writer, economist and scientist. The book has an autobiographical character and, through the author's memories of his education at the Pazin High School, brings a vivid picture of the social, cultural and political conditions in Istria at the beginning of the 20th century.

Balota describes his school days, teachers, school customs, the daily life of students and the atmosphere of Pazin at that time, which was an important educational and national center of the Croatian population in Istria. Through personal experiences, the author depicts the difficult position of Croats under Austro-Hungarian rule, the struggle to preserve language and national identity and the importance of education in the development of social and political consciousness.

The work is not only a collection of memories but also a valuable document of the times. The author combines memoir prose with historical and sociological reflections, creating a convincing testimony about the growth of a generation of Istrian intellectuals. The book is particularly valuable because of Balota's warm, honest and often nostalgic style of storytelling, which manages to evoke the spirit of the school and the environment in which he grew up.

The Old Pazin High School is an important contribution to Croatian memoir literature and the cultural history of Istria. The work provides valuable insight into the educational system, social relations and national turmoil of that period and remains an indispensable read for anyone who wants to better understand Istrian history and Croatian cultural heritage.
