Erich Fromm

A cult work by Erich Fromm. The author does not view love as a mere emotion, but as a skill and art that requires knowledge, effort, maturity, self-discipline, and constant work on one's own personal development.

The Art of Loving (originally published in 1956) is one of the most famous and influential works of the German-American psychoanalyst, social psychologist, and humanist philosopher Erich Fromm. In this timeless book, Fromm approaches love not as a passive feeling that one "falls into," but as a conscious skill, attitude, and art that must be learned and practiced just like any other art. Fromm starts from the thesis that man's deepest need is to be intertwined with others in order to overcome loneliness and separation. However, modern social circumstances and capitalism often turn love into a commercial exchange or mere sexual attraction. The author analyzes different forms of love: brotherly love, maternal love, erotic love, love of oneself (which is not egoism, but a prerequisite for others), and love of God. He emphasizes that true love is not just a relationship with a specific person, but an orientation of character toward the world as a whole. It requires four basic elements: care, responsibility, respect, and knowledge of the other person. Written in an accessible yet deeply philosophical and psychological style, The Art of Love offers concrete insights on how to develop the maturity, self-discipline, and courage needed to practice true, selfless love.
