Portreti nepoznatih žena

Portreti nepoznatih žena

Mara Švel-Gamiršek

This is a collection of short stories depicting the lives of Šokac women in eastern Slavonia, especially in Posavina and Šokadija.

The work is part of her Šokac cycle, along with the books Šuma i Šokci, Hrast and Ovim šorom, Jagodo. Through short prose sketches, the author depicts the fates of rural and urban women, exploring their identity oscillations between the roles of sinners, saints and rebels. The stories are permeated with the Slavonian dialect, which enhances authenticity and atmosphere, and thematize the relationship between man and nature, Christian values, folk customs, love, but also the motifs of infidelity and adultery. Švel-Gamiršek, with her modernist style and deep understanding of Šokac culture, creates portraits that reflect the complexity of women's lives in a rural context.
