Gospođa Bovary

Gospođa Bovary

Gustave Flaubert

The novel follows the life of Emma Bovary, a young woman trapped in the monotony of provincial life and her own romantic illusions. Flaubert criticizes romantic ideals and social hypocrisy, showing the tragic consequences of Emma's escape from reality.

Emma, the daughter of a farmer, was raised on sentimental novels, which instills in her unrealistic expectations of love and luxury. She marries Charles Bovary, a kind-hearted but mediocre doctor, whose simple life in the small town of Yonville does not satisfy her ambitions.

Disillusioned with her marriage, Emma seeks excitement in love affairs. She first falls in love with Leon, a young intern, but their relationship ends unhappily. Later, she enters into a passionate affair with Rodolphe, a wealthy landowner, who abandons her when she becomes too demanding. Humiliated and desperate, Emma sinks into debt due to her extravagant lifestyle, buying luxurious things to fill the emotional void. She reconnects with Leon, but this relationship also brings no fulfillment.

Burdened by financial problems and social condemnation, Emma becomes increasingly desperate. Finally, faced with the impossibility of getting out of debt and the loss of illusions, she takes arsenic and dies a painful death. Charles, broken by her death and the discovery of her affairs, soon dies of grief, leaving their daughter Berthe destitute.
