In this work, Kombol divided Croatian lyric poetry into three periods:
Illyrianism and the Šenoinian period: This includes poets such as Stanko Vraz, Petar Preradović, and Augustin Šenoa, whose works are marked by national revival and romanticism.
The period from Kranjčević to the Croatian Young Lyricist (1914): This segment highlights poets such as Silvij Strahimir Kranjčević, Antun Gustav Matoš, and Vladimir Vidrić, who introduced modernist elements and introspective themes into Croatian poetry.
Post-war lyric poetry: This includes poets such as Tin Ujević, Antun Branko Šimić, and Dobriša Cesarić, whose works reflect the influences of expressionism and existential themes.
This anthology not only provides an overview of the development of Croatian poetry, but also reflects Kombol's critical perspective and his ability to recognize and highlight the most significant poets and their contributions to Croatian literature.
