Judit / Judita

Marko Marulić

Marulić's epic Judith was translated and commented on by Marko Grčić, afterword by Josip Bratulić. Second, revised edition.

Following the example of some English and French editions in which fundamental national epics or other fundamental literary works were translated into modern language for better understanding, Matica hrvatska published in 1998 a fundamental and pioneering work of Croatian literature: Marulić's Judita, the first artistic epic written in the Croatian language. On that occasion, the Dictionary of Marulić's Judita by Milan Moguš was published along with the translation, and for the first time a copy of the second, fine and graphic, most successful edition of Judita from 1522 was printed in its entirety for the first time. Since in the meantime the Dictionary in a more extensive version was published as a separate book (2001), on this occasion it was omitted, and a copy of the first edition of Judita from 1521 was also printed. Also, for this edition, the translator made some changes and supplemented the translation and the notes accompanying the translation.
