Antologija novije srpske lirike

The Anthology of Recent Serbian Poetry, edited by Bogdan Popović in 1911, represents one of the most significant works of Serbian literary criticism and anthological practice.

Published in Zagreb by Matica Hrvatska, this collection aims to present the most beautiful examples of Serbian lyric poetry from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century.

Popović emphasized in the preface that the selection of poems was made solely according to aesthetic criteria, choosing those that were "entirely beautiful", regardless of the historical or cultural significance of the author. He emphasized that the anthology is a collection of poems, not poets, and that the goal was to create a harmonious whole that provides aesthetic pleasure to the reader.

The anthology is divided into three periods:

  • The First Era (after 1840): It includes poets such as Branko Radičević, Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, Đuro Jakšić and Laza Kostić, whose poems reflect romanticism and national revival.

  • Second period (after 1880): Includes poets such as Vojislav Ilić, Jovan Dučić, Aleksa Šantić and Milan Rakić, who introduced modernist elements and formal refinement to Serbian poetry.

  • Third period (after 1900): Represents younger poets such as Sima Pandurović, Veljko Petrović and Danica Marković, whose poems reflected new poetic directions and individual expressions.

Popović avoided including poems that were political, satirical or occasional, focusing exclusively on lyrical poems that expressed deep feelings and aesthetic value. His anthology remains an important contribution to the understanding and appreciation of Serbian lyrical poetry.
