Die Handlung dreht sich um die Flucht von Bobby Ewing (dem jüngeren Sohn, moralisch und aufrecht) und Pam Barnes (der Tochter des Rivalen), die die Familie schockiert. J.R. Ewing (der ältere Sohn, gierig und manipulativ) hasst die Barnes und plant, die Ehe zu verhindern. Patriarch Jock, Matriarchin Miss Ellie, Nichte Lucy (von Gary, dem Ausreißer) und Ranchmanager Ray Krebbs geraten in Macht-, Liebes- und Rachekonflikte.
