„Das Land“ ist ein 1887 erschienener Gesellschaftsroman aus dem „Rougon-Macquart“-Zyklus, in dem Zola die brutale Realität des Lebens unter französischen Bauern schildert.
Die Geschichte spielt in der Landschaft der Beauce, wo Land und Besitz die wichtigsten Lebenskräfte sind, die die Charaktere antreiben. Die Hauptfigur, Jean Macquart, ein ehemaliger Soldat, zieht in das Dorf und beginnt als Tagelöhner zu arbeiten. Er verliebt sich in Françoise, ein fleißiges und ehrliches Mädchen, das versucht, ihr Erbe vor der Gier ihrer Familie zu schützen. François‘ Schwester Lise, die mit dem Bauern Buteau verheiratet ist, und ihr Mann sind zu allem bereit – auch zu Gewalt und Verbrechen –, um möglichst viel Land zu behalten.
Das zentrale Thema des Romans ist die Entmenschlichung durch die Gier nach Land. Bauern werden als brutal, selbstsüchtig und skrupellos dargestellt, die bereit sind, ihre Familienbande und grundlegende menschliche Werte zu opfern. In dieser rauen Welt ist Land nicht nur ein Mittel zum Überleben, sondern auch ein Gegenstand der Begierde und des Konflikts.
Zola schildert das schwierige, oft grausame Leben auf dem Land realistisch und natürlich und lehnt romantische Vorstellungen vom idyllischen Landleben ab. „Erde“ schockierte die damaligen Leser aufgrund der Rohheit seiner Darstellung, doch heute gilt es als eine der größten Errungenschaften der naturalistischen Literatur.
