Vladimir Majakovski

The collection, selected by Dubravka Oraić, includes key works by Mayakovsky, including verses, poems, and the play Bedbugs. This edition highlights Mayakovsky as a rebel, lover, and revolutionary, whose texts combine passion, social criticism, and avant-

The central poem of the collection, The Cloud in Trousers (1915), is a powerful futurist manifesto. Over four sections, Mayakovsky expresses his unrequited love for Maria, his rebellion against bourgeois norms, his critique of art and religion, and his revolutionary fervor. His verses, such as “I am a cry, I am a flame!”, reflect his inner pain and desire for freedom, subverting poetic conventions with free verse and raw language.

The play The Bedbug (1929) is a satirical comedy that mocks Soviet bureaucracy and conformity. The main character, Prisypkin, a former worker who aspires to a bourgeois life, is “resurrected” in the future, where his outdated mentality is exposed to ridicule. The play combines humor, the grotesque, and a critique of social illusions.

The collection also includes poems such as They Understand Nothing and A Conversation with Comrade Lenin, in which Mayakovsky combines intimate lyricism with political passion. Oraić's choice emphasizes its universality – from personal pain to revolutionary fervor – making this work crucial to understanding Mayakovsky and his era.
