Na vrhu jezika i pera (1932.-1942.)

Vladimir Nazor

A collection of essays, notes, and reflections in which Nazor combines literature, culture, and personal reflections, testifying to the spiritual and social turmoil of wartime.

On the Verge of Tongue and Pen is one of the last books published by Vladimir Nazor before his departure from Zagreb in 1942 and his joining the partisan movement. For this reason, the work is read today not only as a literary collection but also as an interesting document of a turning point in the author's life and Croatian cultural history.

The book brings together essays, articles, literary notes and shorter reflections written over several years. In them, Nazor discusses language, literature, art, nature and cultural tradition, but also broader issues of human destiny, creativity and national identity. With a recognizable style, he combines erudition, poetic sensitivity and personal experience, creating texts that move between literary criticism, memoir prose and philosophical meditation.

The book is given special value by its historical context. Published in Zagreb during World War II and during the NDH, it belongs to the last period of Nazor's public activity within the cultural system of that time. The same year the author left Zagreb, and his later political and literary activities took a completely different direction. For this reason, On the Verge of Language and Pen can be seen as a kind of end of a phase of Nazor's life and work.

Today the book is interesting both as a literary collection and as a cultural and historical document that sheds light on the position of one of the most important Croatian writers in the complex circumstances of the war year 1942.
