August Šenoa
August Šenoa (14. November 1838 – 13. Dezember 1881) war einer der bedeutendsten kroatischen Schriftsteller des 19. Jahrhunderts und der Begründer der modernen kroatischen Literatur. Er wurde in Zagreb geboren, in Prag ausgebildet und arbeitete nach seiner Rückkehr in seine Heimat als Journalist, Redakteur und Stadtnotar. Sein Werk hatte großen Einfluss auf das damalige kulturelle Leben Kroatiens.
Šenoa ist vor allem für seine historischen Romane bekannt, die romantische, realistische und nationale Elemente miteinander verbinden, wie etwa Zlatarevo zlato (Das Gold des Goldschmieds) (1871), Čuvaj se Senjske ruke (Hüte dich vor den Händen von Senj), Čećajka buna (Der Bauernaufstand) und Diogenes. In diesen Werken gelang es ihm, die kroatische Geschichte zu rekonstruieren und gleichzeitig Patriotismus, moralische Werte und soziale Verantwortung zu fördern.
Er schrieb auch Kurzgeschichten, Gedichte, Rezensionen und Feuilletons und war Herausgeber der Zeitschrift Vijenac, mit der er literarische und kulturelle Trends prägte. Besonders bedeutend ist sein sprachlicher Beitrag – er setzte sich für die Standardisierung der kroatischen Sprache und ihre Bereicherung durch literarische Ausdrucksformen ein.
Er starb jung, im Alter von 43 Jahren, nachdem er erkrankt war, als er den Bedürftigen während der großen Zagreber Flut von 1880 half. Sein literarischer und kultureller Einfluss bleibt ein bleibender Grundstein der kroatischen Literatur.
