Đakovo - biskupski grad

Đakovo - biskupski grad

Andrija Šuljak, Antun Jarm

The monograph Đakovo – Episcopal City, jointly written by Monsignor Antun Jarm and Dr. Andrija Šuljak, comprehensively presents the history and spiritual heritage of Đakovo, with special emphasis on its role as the seat of a diocese.

The book provides a detailed account of the development of the city from ancient Certisia, through the medieval period and Ottoman rule, to the modern era. Special attention is paid to the Đakovo Cathedral of St. Peter, whose Latin cross-shaped floor plan symbolizes Christian faith and suffering. The cathedral has been described as a "symbolic lighthouse in the plain", and its interior is rich in works of art that illustrate biblical scenes, bringing the faithful closer to sacred history.

Dr. Andrija Šuljak, co-author of the monograph, was a distinguished professor of church history at the Faculty of Theology in Đakovo. Born in 1936 in Josipovac Punitovački, he was ordained a priest in 1962. After studying church history in Rome, he taught at the faculty until his retirement in 2006. He died in 2010, leaving behind a significant contribution to Croatian church historiography.
