Fromm developed as a critic of contemporary society under the influence of Marx, Freud and the Frankfurt circle. He stood out as an original critical interpreter of Freud's conceptions, which are his second basic inspiration.
The book is one of the capital works of the second half of the twentieth century. According to Fromm, it continues two tendencies of his previous works - the analysis of selfishness and altruism as two fundamental character orientations.
