Žena bližnjega tvoga

Gay Talese

Talese's greatest success was achieved precisely with the book Žena bliznega tvoga (1980), which reads like a novel about sexual liberation in America, from experimental "love communes" under the auspices of religious sects, to the spectacular success of

Your Neighbor's Wife is the work of American journalist and writer Gay Talese, one of the most famous representatives of the so-called new journalism. The book is not a novel but an extensive documentary investigation of the social changes that marked the American sexual revolution.

Talese traces the development of attitudes towards sexuality from the conservative 1950s to the period of liberalization during the 1960s and 1970s. He pays special attention to people who questioned traditional norms of marriage and family life. Among them are the publisher of the magazine Modern ManBernard Fritsch, owners and visitors to nudist camps, participants in communities that advocated free love, and the founders of the famous Californian complex Sandstone Retreat, a gathering place for couples interested in unconventional relationships.

The author spent years collecting material, interviewing participants, and personally observing some of the communities he describes. Through their life stories, he shows how social customs, laws, the media, and public morality changed. The book is not only about sexual behavior, but also about issues of privacy, freedom of choice, marital fidelity, and the limits of social tolerance.

Due to its detailed approach and sensitive subject matter, the work attracted great attention and numerous discussions after its publication. Today, it is considered an important document about the cultural and social changes in American society in the second half of the 20th century.
