Identität und Differenz

Martin Heidegger

"Identität und Differenz" (Identity and Difference), published in 1957, is a collection of two lectures by Heidegger that explore the relationship between identity and difference in the context of Being.

Heidegger seeks to show that traditional Western metaphysics has misunderstood identity as a simple identification, ignoring the deeper connection between Being and being.

In the first lecture, "The Principle of Identity", Heidegger starts from the classical formula A = A and asks: what does identity actually mean? He shows that a true understanding of identity requires reflection on the relationship between Being (Sein) and being (Seiendes). Identity is not a mere equality, but the fateful belonging of being to Being.

In the second lecture, "Being and Difference", Heidegger introduces the concept of difference (Differenz) as a fundamental dynamic. Being is not being, but that which makes it possible for beings to be. The difference between Being and being is not something to be overcome, but that which makes it possible to open up the world and understand existence.

This ontological difference is crucial for Heidegger's late philosophy: only by reflecting on difference can one escape the limitations of traditional metaphysics and open up to a new relationship to Being.

"Identity and Difference" calls for a different way of thinking – no longer through opposites and simple correlations, but through respect for the hidden relationships that determine existence itself.
