Roman objavljen 1891. godine, jedno je od najpoznatijih psiholoških i društvenih djela Henrika Sjenkjeviča. Za razliku od njegovih povijesnih romana, ovo djelo donosi introspektivan i filozofski prikaz dekadentnog plemstva u 19. stoljeću.
